Protecting patients in crisis is the foundation of this specialty, and Dr. Haar’s research, publications, and practice have focused on the most urgent needs of patients facing human rights violations, both in the U.S. and abroad. Her work focuses on the protection of human rights in times of complex humanitarian crisis and conflict. She is particularly interested in the protection of health workers and health services in crisis settings. Dr. Haar’s research interests include studying the impact of human rights violations, such as torture, violations of free speech and assembly, and war crimes, on health. Most recently, she has worked with residents to publish research about bias in the management of agitation in the ED, the ethics of research in humanitarian settings, the health impacts of crowd control weapons and the social, economic and health consequences of wildfires in California. She received her BA and MD from the University of Chicago and her MPH from Columbia University. She trained in emergency medicine at the NYU/Bellevue Hospitals.

Kathryn Hawk’s trailblazing research pushes the scientific boundaries of both emergency and addiction medicine by focusing on ED-initiated buprenorphine and linkage to treatment for opioid use disorder. She has worked to expand the implementation of best practices for ED patients with addictions nationwide and has been highly influential in driving the development of ACEP’s content and vision to improve the care of ED patients with OUD.
